What is a golden number?

short answers for big questions

This number has stimulated the curiosity of many mathematicians for a long time. It is represented by the Greek letter `Phi` (Phi), and it is also known as being the golden number. Lots of mathematicians considered it an offer from God to the world, since it appeared in many places throughout nature.

One of the ways to find the numerical representation of `Phi` is through the ratio `Phi=(1+sqrt(5))/2`, which is equivalent to the nom-periodic tenth of 1.61803398... Thus, it is an irrational number, which is found from the Golden ratio (divine proportion).

Where can the golden number be found?

This famous number can be found in several flowers and plants. We can also find it on paintings, sculptures, music and buildings. For instance, several works of Leonardo Da Vinci make use of the divine proportion, among which we can call the attention to the Mona Lisa painting as being one of the most famous. The Greek, at Pythagorean School, represented the golden number through the pentagram which contains the golden proportion. In the Ancient Egypt the Gizé Pyramids were built according to the golden ratio: the quotient between the height of a side and the half of the base of the great pyramid is equal to the golden number. Fibonacci used the golden ratio to solve the famous rabbit problem, which is nowadays known as the sequence of Fibonacci numbers. Among nature the standard of development of many plants can be connected to this sequence.
