Why do I have to learn Maths?

short answers for big questions

This is a very complex question, which has many possible answers. Lots of teachers will answer: “because Maths helps you to think.” Although it is true, the sentence is also valid for many other different activities like chess, crosswords or even to memorize lyrics. However, unlike chess, crosswords or lyrics we can find Maths everywhere, even in fields which don’t apparently have nothing to do with Maths such as researches concerning the cancer cure, cooking, taking some daily decisions, control of air traffic and so on.

But... Do I really have to learn Maths?

Yes, you do, because Maths is a multidisciplinary science, that is, the knowledge that is acquired through Maths is used in other subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, economics, psychology, sociology, civil engineering and so on. Maths can also be found in all technological devices such as computers, rockets, televisions, mobile phones, internet and others. Besides that, Maths helps us to think in a logical way and to solve problems by using this kind of logic. It also teaches us to clearly and accurately put our ideas and thoughts in words, which is very useful regarding the different fields of our life.

learning math is difficult

I am not already convinced; could you give me more reasons, please?

Lots of comments I receive about Maths are connected with the fact that nowadays calculators already solve all the calculations for us. Although this is true, we can’t Forget that there was someone who had to program the machines and to do that he/she had to use Maths. Besides that the argument is not valid, because the question could also be asked regarding other fields such as: Why do I have to learn reading? Nowadays we also have computer programs able to read a text for us. Having in mind calculators again, although they solve calculations, they do not solve problems. I have to correctly introduce the instructions in the calculator so as to obtain the solution of the problem. Finally, I must have some critical thought in order to judge if the solution given by the calculator actually corresponds to the right answer. Lots of pupils accept the numbers given by the calculator without performing any judgement or without checking if the solution makes sense. But to perform this kind of discernment you need to know about Maths.
