Unfortunately, there is more than one method to solve problems. According to the type of problem, we can try different approaches which can work or not depending on the situation. The first logical step is to understand the problem. If necessary, you should read the problem twice or three times till you are sure you understand what you are asked to do. Then, you have to check the given quantities of the problem to select the ones which are necessary to solve the problem. Is all the given information necessary to solve the problem? Actually, we have to distinguish essentials from non-essentials. Sometimes it is also useful to draw a picture of the problem, because it helps us to “visualize” the problem and think about it. After finding a strategy, you have to try it to see if it works. If it does not work, we will have to choose another approach.
When you are faced with very complex or long problems, it is useful to divide the problem into several smaller problems and then solve them separately. It can also help if you proceed to some analogies with other similar and simpler situations having smaller numbers. Try to solve the problem using smaller numbers and then you can extrapolate to see what would happen if numbers were bigger.
Last but not the least; you must always test the solution you have reached. Does it make sense in the context of the problem? Try and make an estimate before starting solving the problem. Is the solution you reached in tune with your estimate? Is it right? Like many other things in our lives, do not forget that the more you practice, the easier it will become!
